Land Art
2017 - 2018Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, FL
These pieces seek to explore the disconnect between myself in the US and my family and culture in Nicaragua, through a series of land art pieces.
DISCONNECT (2018)
Each line: 50 ft * 3 ft * 1 ft
Disconnect was my attempt to express this internal struggle I have always had with myself, being the first in my family to be born outside of Nicaragua causing this internal strife. I feel this loss of continuity and disconnect from my culture and heritage no matter how hard I try to connect with it.

DISPLACEMENT (2018)
Size varies
Displacement is a piece that makes an attempt to speak about the experience of having to emigrate from your homeland to a foreign new land. This piece more specifically talks about my parent's experience of having to leave all they knew behind and uprooting their entire existence having to move to the US from Nicaragua in an attempt to escape the Contra War that was occurring in Nicaragua at the time. A conflict which was as a result of the very country which they were fleeing to, backing rebels to overthrow the government.

AN ATTEMPT AT PERSPECTIVE (2018)

LINE IN THE SAND (2017)
60 ft * 1 ft * 1 ft
Line in the Sand has two interpretations
1. Line in the Sand was made as a physical representation of the rift between my parents and I. My parents since immigrating to this country have attempted to adopts its customs and language in an attempt to assimilate to the country. As the one who was the first in his family to be born in the US as opposed to Nicaragua, i've always wanted make up for that by keeping a close connection with my Nicaraguan culture. This causes friction as I am attempting to be more Nicaraguan while my parents attempt to be more American.
2. Line in the Sand was made during a very politically charged time in the US (right after the 2016 elections) and was meant to be a physical representation of the tension and divide in the country both politically and culturally.
