Sergi Espinales
b. Miami, FLMy art practice is centered on the belief that art can be a powerful tool for social change, inspired by the ideas of artists who have worked with social sculpture, before me. In my work I aim to engage with political and social issues through a range of approaches, ranging from didactic and pedagogical to the poetic and satirical.
Through a blend of humor, research, and historical analysis, I strive to explore history and contemporary events, taking both a serious and satirical approach to subverting power structures. My work often involves the co-option of aesthetics, as I seek to recreate and subvert these structures to achieve my own goals while also providing alternative visions for change.
My personal family history has also been a major driving force in my artistic practice. My parents having emigrated from Nicaragua to the United States in the 1980s. This personal history intersects with broader themes of politics, space, labor, and power in my work.
The incorporation of digital media has also made its way into my practice as a manner of exploring the potential for wide dissemination and democratization of my ideas and work. Through the incorporation of digital technology I seek to further further explore these themes, transcending traditional physical limitations of scale, material, and boundaries.
